Why do I work, why do I study? I observe a trend to address problems by deploying technology. The trend results in an increasing reliance on tech. While the technologists pitch their solutions as necessary, I wonder what conditions are sufficient to solve the problems. I have designed and developed technological applications to deliver legal services. The legal tech industry measures the problem by number of people with unmet needs, it's impact by number of people helped. But how do we know our products contribute to solutions more than to the problem? If technological solutions did create more problems, even while helping an increasing number of people, how could we tell? Surely, helping any person is worthwhile, the question is how to ensure that the help provided does not create more suffering. I work to improve access to justice. I study to understand and adapt my impact.
